Who Is the American Designer Behind Cat-Eye Eyeglass Frames?

About Altina Schinasi

Google marks the birthday of Altina Schinassi, an American artist, creator, and inventor. Her fantastic work in fashion and glasses design has made her well-known.

Her parents were immigrants, and she was born in 1907 in Manhattan, New York. Her amazing adventures led her to create the famous Harlequin eyeglass frames, now known as “cat-eye” frames. Shinasi’s spirit and drive changed eyewear making, making a lasting mark on the fashion world.

Chinasi’s Early Education

Shinasi’s passion for art was awakened while studying painting in Paris. On his return to America, he joined The Art Students League in New York, where he honed his skills as an artist. Her creative journey took an unexpected turn when she became a window dresser for various stores on Fifth Avenue. This opportunity introduced him to the design world and motivated him to collaborate with influential artists such as Salvador Dali and George Grosz.

Where did the idea of the Cat-Eye Frame come from?

The idea for cat-eye frames was born during Shinasi’s time as a window display designer when she noticed a lack of stylish options for women’s eyewear.

Determined to change the status quo, he drew inspiration from the harlequin masks worn during the Carnevale festival in Venice, Italy. They believed that the pointed edges of the mask would beautifully adorn a woman’s face.

Undeterred by initial rejections from significant manufacturers, Shinasi tried and found success when a local shop owner recognized the potential of his design.

Harlequin glasses quickly gained popularity and became an iconic fashion for women in America during the 1930s and 1940s. Shinasi’s invention earned him widespread recognition, including the prestigious Lord & Taylor American Design Award in 1939.

The influential designer was featured in major magazines such as Vogue and Life, cementing her position as a pioneer in eyewear fashion.
